Five free AI tricks, every Tuesday

Plan the Trip Around Your Knees, Not Just the Map

A Michigan fall-color weekend, a long-promised trip to see the grandkids, or the big bucket-list one. Tell the AI your budget, how far you like to walk, and that you'd like a nap at 2 p.m., thank you very much. It'll draft a relaxed, realistic day-by-day plan.

Why it's useful

Most travel websites assume you want to walk 15,000 steps and eat dinner at 9 p.m. An AI chatbot plans around your needs: limited walking, a cane or scooter, benches and restrooms, mid-day rest, an easy budget, and early dinners. It's a great first draft that saves hours of searching. You still confirm the details, but you start with a plan that fits.

Which free AI to use

Best free pick: ChatGPT — type chatgpt.com into your web browser, or install the free “ChatGPT” app from your phone’s app store.

Free plan, honestly: Free, and works without signing in. A free account is optional; it saves your chats and unlocks extras like the read-aloud button. Unlimited everyday text chat, but only 3 file or photo uploads per day, and voice chat is limited (OpenAI doesn't say how many minutes).

How to open it: Go to chatgpt.com (or open the ChatGPT app). No account needed to start; a free account is optional and lets you come back to your plan later. The free plan can search the web for current information. If it doesn't do so on its own, add “Please search the web for current details” to your message. Type in the box at the bottom that says “Ask…” (the exact words vary, such as “Ask ChatGPT”).

Also works in: Gemini (no account needed). Claude and Copilot can also search the web and plan trips, but each needs a free account first.

Step by step

  1. Decide the basics: where (or “somewhere within 3 hours of Detroit”), when, who's going, and a rough budget.
  2. Be honest about comfort: how far you can comfortably walk, stairs, a wheelchair or scooter, dietary needs, and when you like to rest.
  3. Open ChatGPT at chatgpt.com.
  4. Copy the prompt below with the blue button, paste it in, and fill in the brackets.
  5. Press Send and read the plan. Ask for changes: “Swap Saturday afternoon for something indoors in case it rains.”
  6. Ask for a checklist: “Make me a list of every place I should call to confirm hours, prices, and accessibility.”
  7. Make those calls (or check official websites) before you book anything. See the tips below for why.

The prompt to copy and paste

Press the button to copy it. Then paste it into ChatGPT's message box. Replace anything in [square brackets] with your own details.

Copy-paste prompt
Please help me plan a relaxed trip.

- Where: [e.g., a fall-color weekend in Michigan, within 3 hours' drive of Detroit]
- When and how long: [e.g., 2 nights in mid-October]
- Who's going: [e.g., my wife and me, both in our 70s]
- Budget: [e.g., about $600 total, not counting gas]
- Getting around: [e.g., we drive; I walk with a cane and can manage about 15 minutes at a time]
- Must-haves: [e.g., a ground-floor or elevator hotel room, a nap break after lunch, early dinners, one nice meal]
- Things we enjoy: [e.g., scenic drives, small museums, good pie]

Please search the web for current information. Give me a simple day-by-day plan with rest breaks built in, note where there are stairs or long walks, and suggest a backup indoor activity for bad weather. Finish with a list of places I should call to confirm hours, prices, and accessibility.

What the AI might say back

EXAMPLE ONLY This is a made-up sample to show the kind of answer you'll get. Your answer will be worded differently and based on your own situation.

A Slow-and-Easy Frankenmuth Weekend (about 1.5 hours from Detroit)

Friday

Saturday

Rainy-day backup: …

Call to confirm: hotel (room location, elevator), restaurant (hours, reservations), Bronner's (mobility aids), riverboat (season and boarding ramp)…

Tips

Privacy note

The AI doesn't need your home address, credit card, or passport number to plan a trip. Book directly on the hotel's or airline's official website or by phone. And if the AI mentions medical needs (oxygen on a plane, medication timing across time zones), check with your doctor and the airline.
